The Financing Process
The first step towards getting a home loan is known as pre-qualification. During this phase, a lender looks over your credit history and will give you an idea of the size of home loan you might qualify for. The pre-qualification step helps you understand how much house you can afford to buy.
The next step after pre-qualification is pre-approval. This phase involves a bit more paperwork on your part and gives you and the lender a better idea of the amount you’re able to borrow and the type of interest rate you might get based on your credit history and financial details.
Once you’re pre-approved, you can start making offers on homes in your price range. When you’ve found the home for you, you fill out a complete mortgage application, put in an offer and wait for the pieces to fall into place. An underwriter will verify that you qualify for the financing and that the home is worth what you are offering for it. If everything is in order, the underwriter will approve the loan. The final step is the closing process, after which the home is yours.
